How to Overcome Rejection When You Hear “I Never Loved You”

“I never loved you.”

Those four words changed my life.

The Pain of Rejection

I was eighteen years old when my mother asked if we could talk. The morning sunlight streamed through the back door as I sat beside her on our worn brown couch. Through tears, she confessed words I never expected to hear: “I never loved you.”

For years, I had quietly carried the question, Why can’t someone love me? In that moment, I thought I had finally found my answer.

As she wept, she asked me to forgive her. I did, but I left that conversation with a heart full of confusion. I couldn’t understand how a mother could not love her own child. Years later, I learned that her confession was not born of cruelty but of illness. Postpartum depression had robbed her of the ability to bond with me during my earliest years. Understanding the cause helped explain the wound, but it didn’t erase it.

Those early experiences shaped far more of my life than I realized. I struggled with broken relationships, insecurity, depression, and an unshakable feeling that I wasn’t enough. Although I believed God loved me, I couldn’t experience that love personally.

His love felt just beyond my reach. The best way I can describe it is standing behind a pane of glass at Niagara Falls. I could see the beauty and power of the waterfall, but I couldn’t feel the mist on my face or hear the thunder of the rushing water. I knew God’s love was real, but it remained an intellectual truth instead of a lived experience.

Looking back, I’m grateful that God didn’t leave me there.

Rejection Doesn’t Define You

Over the years, He patiently began uncovering the rejection that had shaped my identity. Through Scripture, prayer, wise counselors, and countless moments of quiet grace, He showed me that rejection didn’t define me—He did.

As a little girl, I often sat in church singing the hymn, Isaiah 49. One Scripture verse always brought tears to my eyes: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15, NIV).

At the time, I didn’t understand why those words affected me so deeply. Years later, after learning about my mother’s postpartum depression, I realized God had been speaking hope into my life long before I understood my own story.

Even if human love fails, God’s love never does. That realization transformed gratitude for me.

Unfolding Healing

Gratitude isn’t pretending painful things never happened. It isn’t minimizing loss or denying grief. Rather, gratitude recognizes God’s faithfulness in the middle of our brokenness. It remembers that even when people fail us, God remains steadfast.

Today, I can honestly thank God not for my wounds, but for his presence within them. I’m grateful He pursued me when I didn’t know how to seek him. I’m grateful He patiently untangled the lies rejection had planted in my heart. I’m grateful He taught me that my worth was never determined by another person’s ability—or inability—to love me well. Most of all, I’m grateful that my identity rests securely in the Father’s love rather than in the opinions or actions of others.

Healing didn’t happen overnight. It unfolded one step at a time as I learned to receive what had always been true: I belong to God.

Perhaps you’ve experienced rejection too. Your story may be very different from mine, but maybe you’ve wondered if you were enough, if you mattered, or if you were truly loved. If so, I hope you’ll remember this: another person’s failure to love you well is never a measure of your worth.

The Father sees you. He knows you completely. He delights in you. His love has never depended on your performance, your past, or the approval of other people. When I look back now, I no longer see only the pain of that conversation on the couch. I also see the beginning of a journey that led me to discover the depth of God’s unfailing love. For that, I am deeply grateful.

Begin Within: A Gratitude Series, hosted by Twyla Franz

Begin Within is a series to inspire a year-round lifestyle of gratitude that will impact not only your own life, but the lives of your neighbors as well. Gratitude is a theme we talk about often around here because it ties so closely into other missional living rhythms. Practicing gratitude reminds to keep our hearts soft and expectant and our eyes open. Therefore, the more we embrace gratitude, the easier it becomes to truly see our neighbors and where we can join what God is already doing in our neighborhoods.
