A Prayer of Blessing for Thanksgiving Day

A Blessing for Imperfect, God-Present Thanksgivings

Thanks. We practice it all month and now we’re here. But there’s no pressure to say it perfect, only welcome–to behold You so praise becomes spontaneous. To name the grace etched deep in yesterday’s marred canvas and tomorrow’s blank one. To list gifts tucked into unhurried and hidden places, in wide open and unlikely places, in untamed and transparent places.

Before the day grows busy, we pause here with You. Still our souls and soften our hearts. Prepare us for all the day may bring. Remind us that You’re Peace, and You’re right here.

As we chop and stuff and scoop and slice, may we awake to wonder. The drip and dollop, the apple skin curling as we peel, the aroma and taste-test spoons–all gifts! The cacophony and chaos, the cramped counter space, the shuffle through recipe cards–what priceless gifts!

As we welcome all who gather, may our eyes be wide open with wonder and our lens be gratitude, gratitude, gratitude. May we cherish and embrace, honor and make space, love boldly and listen intently.

Where differences seek to disrupt, remind how You bridged the divide and came for every last one of us.

When anxiety rises, nudge us back to the place of eyes on You.

If overwhelm sets in, overwhelm us instead with You.

When perfectionism has us stressed and sharp-toned, melt us with Your perfect, unconditional love.

Where we’re tender from failed efforts to please, whisper to our hearts that we’re dearly loved already.

Where disappointment collides with hopes and prayers and expectations, remind us how You see and care.

Thank you for the gift of today, for the joy of saying thanks, and that You are with us in the moments we ache and feel unseen just as You are in the moments we brim with effortless gratitude.

Amen and amen.

Here for you,

Twyla
